Check Point Software Technologies Ltd. (NASDAQCHKP) is a hardware and software company that is best known for its firewall and VPN products. The company was founded in 1993 in Ramat-Gan, Israel, by Gil Shwed, Shlomo Kramer, and Marius Nacht. The company has approximately 1900 employees[2]. Check Point's development centers are located in Israel and in Belarus. They also have offices in Redwood City, California and in the Dallas, Texas area.

Products

Check Point's products fall into the following main categories:

  • Network Security - this is Check Point's core business of products such as the VPN-1 firewall software which runs on operating systems such as Secure Platform (Check Point's RHEL-derived version of Linux), Nokia IPSO, Microsoft Windows and Solaris, as well as their UTM-1 firewall appliances and the Sofaware line of embedded firewall products. See the full FireWall-1 article for full information. Check Point also have an SSL VPN product called Connectra and Intrusion Prevention System, IPS-1.
  • Data Security, which comprises of the software developed by Pointsec and Reflex Magnetics prior to being acquired by Check Point. These products are now being rolled into Check Point's single agent for Endpoint Security.
  • Endpoint Security, which includes personal firewall, anti-virus, Full Disk Encryption and removable media encryption and port control software.
  • Security Management, which includes MSSP products such as Provider-1.

Acquisitions

  • Sofaware, in January 2002.[citation needed]
  • Zone Labs, makers of the Zone Alarm personal firewall software, in 2003, for $205 million in cash and shares[3].
  • Protect Data, the holding company for PointSec Mobile Technologies, in a cash deal valued at $586m in late 2006[4]. Prior to their acquisition by Check Point, Protect Data acquired Reflex Software[5].
  • NFR security, an intrusion prevention system developer, for $20 million in late 2006, following its failed plan to acquire the larger IPS vendor Sourcefire[6].

In 2005, Check Point tried to acquire intrusion prevention system developers Sourcefire for $225 million[7], but later withdrew its offer after it became clear US authorities would try to block the acquisition[8].

Certification

Check Point have a long-running history of training and certification on their products, including the Check Point Certified Security Administrator and Security Expert certifications.
