质子数是指中性原子的原子核内质子的数量。
质子数决定其原子的化学性质及此原子属于何种化学元素。
在化学周期表的元素中：原子序 = 质子数 = 中性原子核外的电子数。如氧元素原子序 = 质子数 = 中性原子核外的电子数 = 8
